About us: The Active Community Initiative, launched by activists of the Respublika Institute after the Euromaidan (2014), focused on activating and involving Ukrainians in the decision-making process. The goal for 2025 is to activate and involve at least 1% of citizens in decision-making and promoting reforms in Ukraine on a systematic basis for the well-being of Ukrainian communities. Today we work in 30 communities in Ukraine.

Ukraine in Brief:

Day ninety-third of Ukrainian people’s heroic struggle against the russian military invasion goes on.

There is no change in the north of Ukraine. The threat of missile and air strikes from the territory of belarus remains.

In Sivershyna direction, the enemy continues with measures to reinforce a section of the Ukrainian-russian border in the Bryansk and Kursk Oblasts to prevent Ukrainian defence units from being transferred to other directions.

There has been no offensive enemy action in the direction of Slovyansk. The enemy has shelled Svyatohirsk, Bohorodychne and Virnopillya. The russian invaders have also deployed aviation to hit Slovyansk and Dovhenke.

In the direction of Lyman, the enemy is trying to squeeze our units from the population centre to boost the offensive towards Slovyansk. It has used mortars and MRLSs to fire the areas of Ozerne and Dibrova. An air strike in the area of Siversk has also taken place.

In Severodonetsk direction, the russian invaders supported by artillery have been storming in the area of Shchedryshcheve, Borivske and Toshkivka; the hostilities are continuing.

The enemy is trying to improve its tactical position in the direction of Bakhmut and cut the supply lines of our troops. It has been storming the areas of Komyshuvakha, Berestove and Bilohorivka, though without success.

In the direction of Avdiyivka, the enemy has been using artillery to pummel civilian infrastructure in the areas of Novobakhmutivka, Kamyanka, Avdiyivka, Pisky and Maryinka.

In Kurakhovo, Novopavlivsk and Zaporizhzhya directions, the enemy has been using mortars, rocket and conventional artillery alon the line of contact. The invaders used Su-25 ground attack planes to strike the areas of Mala Tokmachka and Orikhove.

In the Mykolayiv and Kherson Oblasts, the aggressor is focusing its efforts on the keeping of taken objectives, the tying down of our troops and on preventing our defence forces from relocating to other directions. It is shelling our troops and has taken an unsuccessful attempt of storming the area of Liubymivka.

Black Sea navy in the Black and Azov seas are continuning with their tasks of isolating the war zone, carrying out reconnaissance and fire support missions in the direction of the littoral area.

In the Kherson Oblast, UAF’s MiG-29 has downed the enemy Su-25.


Northern Oblasts

Kyiv

Czech Ambassador is back in the city. Czech Foreign Ministry says it will continue assisting Ukraine and support it on the way towards receiving the status of EU candidate country.

Four WWII artillery shells have been found by pyrotechnicians in the M. Hrishko Botanic Garden.


Kyiv Oblast

A russian handbook with quoted recommendations on how to communicate with residents on temporarily occupied territories has been found in Dymerka. The handbook suggests replacing the words ‘killed’/‘liquidated’/‘shot down’ with ‘the problem has been solved’ and deflecting crimes towards the Ukrainian government.

Bucha has started to come back to live. They are restoring the sidewalks destroyed by the invaders.

North Macedonia’s Foreign Minister paid a visit to Irpin.


Zhytomyr Oblast

The shelling of oil depots in the Oblast by the invaders have caused environmental damage worth in excess of UAH200 million.

26 streets of the city will receive new names during the de-russification.

A territorial social services centre is offering hot lunches for those in need and registered.


Chernihiv Oblast

Mine clearing works are continuing in the Oblast. Some 25 thousand explosive devices have been extracted there since the start of the war.

Ordinary citizens have joined administration officials and volunteers to clean up Yalivshchyna today. 

Proposals to rename streets of Chernihiv have started to come in.

They will re-open sales of alcoholic beverages in the Oblast, though with a time limit.


Sumy Oblast

On the night of May 27, the Sumy Oblast has been fired at by the russians yet again. The territory of the Shostka Raion was subjected to shelling that damaged private homes and the outskirts of the village of Stari Vyrki. No casualties have been reported, OMA Head says.

Water utility repairs have been finalised and water supply to the village of Pishchane restored.

Eight communities of the Oblast that are the most affected by russian shellings have been included in Ministry of Integration’s list of communities where all the IDPs will be eligible for financial assistance from the government.


Eastern Oblasts

Kharkiv Oblast

In the Slobozhansk direction, the russian military is mining the area along the routes of possible deployment of Ukrainian troops units.

In the Kharkiv direction, the occupiers are trying to maintain their positions and prevent the advance of Ukrainian troops.

During the day, rescuers extinguished 14 fires caused by russian shelling. There were fires both in the Kharkiv city and in the oblast. Private houses and outbuildings were damaged.

An outbuilding was on fire in Dergachi from enemy shelling. There is an injured woman. The body of the dead man was found on the territory of a private house.

In Lyubotyn, a boarding school was damaged by shelling, no one was injured.

In the area of Pavlovo Pole there were 4 fires caused by russian shelling.

As a result of the shelling during the day in Kharkiv there are 19 wounded and 9 dead civilians.

The Saltivska metro line has completely resumed its work. Trains run every 10 minutes.


Luhansk Oblast

In Severodonetsk, the enemy damaged 90% of the housing, 60% of which will be impossible to operate. The situation is so tense that the local authorities in Severodonetsk are preparing a plan to evacuate people.

As a result of enemy shelling during the day 4 people were killed in Severodonetsk.

A police station was shelled in Lysychansk, and about 50 homes were damaged in the region.


Donetsk Oblast

Over the past 24hrs, 12 enemy attacks have been repulsed in the Donetsk and Luhansk directions. An enemy tank, 5 artillery systems, 5 units of armored combat vehicles and 5 cars were destroyed. The air defense units shot down an enemy helicopter "Ka-52", a cruise missile and an unmanned aerial vehicle "Orlan-10".

Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka and 9 other settlements were left without water. This is a consequence of damage to the Second Donetsk water supply system. Donbass Water Specialists went to determine the location and cause of the damage, but came under fire and were forced to take refuge in a safe place. Restoration of water supply will depend on the operational military situation.

Since the beginning of the russian invasion of Ukraine, 437 civilians have been killed and 1,169 wounded in shelling and bombing in the Donetsk oblast.

On May 26, the russians killed 4 more civilians in Donetsk oblast: 2 in Mariinka, 1 in Lyman and 1 in Zorya. Information about 1 dead and 1 wounded in Dibrova became known.


Bakhmut

The enemy is trying to develop success in the Bakhmut direction, disrupt logistics routes and cut off units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the main forces.

The coordinator of the AUI "Active Community" provided consultations on receiving humanitarian aid.


Southern Oblasts

Zaporizhzhia Oblast

The russian military continues to concentrate its main forces in the areas of Orikhiv, Huliaipole (Zaporizhzhia oblast) and Velyka Novosilka (Donetsk oblast) districts. There is an increase in enemy forces and resources along the line Vasylivka - Polohy. At other borders along the front line, restraining actions are being taken.

Yesterday, enemy troops fired heavy artillery at Huliaipole. As a result, private houses were severely damaged, as well as the territory of one local private enterprise. The russians also shelled the residential sector of Komyshuvakha and the village of Novoyakovlivka. The shelling damaged houses and injured residents.

In the evening and at night the invaders fired on Orikhiv. As a result, the city's water supply networks were damaged.

Currently, there is no water supply in Huliaipole, Stepnohirsk and adjacent settlements of Polohy and Vasylivka raions.

During the past 24hrs, the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed 2 multiple rocket launchers "Grad", 2 tanks, an armored combat vehicle and 7 units of motor vehicles in the Zaporizhzhya direction, and a helicopter "Mi-8" was damaged.

Occupied Berdyansk was connected to 3 russian radio stations. Radio "Krym" broadcasts news of the occupied territories of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts every hour. The russian propaganda calls the captured areas as "liberated." The occupiers are also trying to persuade locals to switch to mobile networks of russian operators.


Central Oblasts

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast 

At 4 am, the runazis fired 3 missiles at the barracks of the National Guard of Ukraine in Dnipro. According to preliminary data, 10 people are dead and 35 injured. The destruction is significant.

The mayor of Dnipro criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for not supplying weapons to Ukraine and not providing sufficient financial assistance.

In Dnipro, a youth hub of Luhansk Oblast is being set up by the Department of Youth Policy of the Dnipro City Council.

On May 27th, “TAPS-Ukraine” and the Dnipro Volunteer Coordination Headquarters donated a large batch of food to the 98th Territory Defense Unit. Among other things, it included canned meat and vegetables, ready-made canned foods, pasta, cereals, juices and more. There should be enough products for defenders for at least two weeks.

Today, over 242 thousand internally displaced people reside in Dnipropetrovsk oblast. Among them, 87 thousand women and 60.5 thousand children. In addition, 55,000 IDPs are people with limited mobility and people over 60. As for the employment of IDPs, to date 2087 internally displaced persons have officially registered for work.

Sowing of spring wheat is being completed in the region, more than 5.1 thousand hectares have been sown. This figure is 40% higher than last year.

The regional coordinator of the AUI "Active Community" works as an editor for one of the largest news sites in the region. The communication coordinator of AUI “Active Community” helps citizens in Kharkiv as a volunteer.


Kirovograd oblast

An air raid alarm was announced, as there was a threat of a missile strike.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are guarding the oblast’s borders and military facilities. Representatives of the Territory Defense were on duty at checkpoints and patrolled the city together with police.

The head of the Kirovohrad State Administration, Andriy Raikovych, said that the situation in the communities was under control. He thanked the glorious Armed Forces of Ukraine for protecting the lives of citizens.

Since the beginning of the war, the region has accepted more than 146,000 migrants. In recent days, the flow from the east has increased. There is a trend, almost all remain to live in the community.

The task of creating communal housing and providing food is becoming more urgent. For a day in the oblast 11 babies were born. Almost 5,000 residents of the oblast sheltered migrants for free. This was reported to the Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration by Olga Dovzhuk, Director of the Department of Housing and Communal Services and the Fuel and Energy Complex of the Kirovohrad Oblast State Administration.

Over the next six months, the NGO “Press Club Reform” will implement the Culinary Coffee project in support of the community of volunteers "Feeding Patriots!".

The coordinator of the UAI “Active Community” provided IDPs with advice on obtaining documents on the status of internally displaced persons, as well as information on the available resources of employers of the regional center and surrounding communities.


Poltava Oblast

The head of the Poltava Regional State Administration said that they plan to build 100,000 square meters of housing for internally displaced people to live in Poltava. They are designed for 2,000 people. The construction will be financed from the state budget. New housing will be provided to IDPs temporarily until their homes are rebuilt. People are planned to be resettled by the end of the year. 

In Poltava, there is an initiative "Poltava in action", which is aimed at helping the Armed Forces. This time a certificate for a patriotic tattoo was put up for auction. All proceeds from the auction will be transferred to purchase an ATV for Poltava residents at the frontier.

In the village of Kharkivtsi, Myrhorod district, Poltava oblast, the last monument to Vasyl Chapaev, a military figure of the Russian Empire and Bolshevik Russia, a member of the RSDLP (Bolsheviks), commander of the 25th Rifle Division of the Red Army, and a participant in the establishment of Soviet power, was dismantled. Now the bust of the Russian Bolshevik is in the Hadiach Museum of Local Lore, it is planned to move to the "Park of the Soviet period" in Putivl. 

The Poltava team of AUI ``Active Community” is looking for a professional lawyer for a family of internally displaced persons who find themselves in a difficult situation. Preparations are also underway for the next art-therapy event.


Western oblasts

Rivne oblast

The general situation is relatively calm, there was one air alarm.

Soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine patrol the border with Belarus. Representatives of the Territory Defense are patrolling and are on duty at checkpoints.

Since the introduction of martial law, 1.7 thousand internally displaced persons living in the community have applied to employment services.

Free flour will be handed out by the UN World Food Program starting from May 27th. 

The coordinators of the AUI “Active Community” assisted in conducting a focus group study on the problems and needs of internally displaced persons.


Khmelnytskyi Oblast

Kamianets-Podilskyi

The city authorities continue to provide the military with everything they need. They used money from the local budget. Today, at the request of the Territorial Defense Forces, working equipment was purchased and handed over to them. So far, more than 1,8 million hryvnias have been disbursed under the relevant program. D. Chebotaryov Institute of Gerontology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine thanked the Kamianets-Podilskyi community for providing medical humanitarian aid to patients of the institution. The City Mayor informs about the availability of fuel at gas stations located in the community on a daily basis on the official site of the City Council. The Department of Social Protection has already registered more than 21,000 IDPs. These are 4953 children under 18, 8385 adults, 546 people with disabilities, 2108 pensioners. Another 10 IDPs were officially registered yesterday. 

Yesterday, the House of Culture hosted the Festival “Legend of the Art of Old Kamyanets”, which raised 21,200 hryvnias for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The AUI “Active Community” coordinator organized the opening of the annual exhibition of paintings “Kamyanetska Vesna” under the slogan "Buy a picture and help the Armed Forces of Ukraine". 


Chernivtsi Oblast

Currently, the situation in Chernivtsi Oblast is calm. Business facilities and people are working. 

Today, Bukovyna residents paid their last tribute to the hero who died for the freedom of Ukraine in a fierce battle against the russian invasion. They paid tribute to senior soldier Ivan Sazonov in the village of Zeleniv.

The charity Fight for Freedom has donated humanitarian aid to displaced families currently living in Bukovyna. In the last two weeks, philanthropists have given 561 boxes of food kits, hygiene products and appliances for their needs. 

The AUI “Active Community” coordinator in Chernivtsi Inna Pashanyuk organized the work of the social kitchen. She managed the work of volunteers, issued orders, and received humanitarian aid.   


Zakarpattia Oblast

There are no hostilities on the territory of Zakarpattia. 

Petro Dobromilskyi, Deputy Head of the Zakarpattia Oblast State Administration, presented 72 didactic kits for children with special needs to the heads of educational centers in Oblast. According to him, all materials are extremely important for a productive educational process in the form of games. Puzzles, balls, plot pictures positively affect hand motor skills, attention, speech, and thinking of children with different nosologies.

58 employers in Zakarpattia got the green light from the Zakarpattia Oblast Employment Center to employ 128 IDPs.

The exhibition "Life against War" has been opened in T. Lehotskyi Oblast Local History Museum In Uzhhorod. The visitors can see how the volunteer movements started working, how they brought food, warmed the IDPs and helped them at the train stations or borders, and how people worked 24/7 to coordinate and accommodate people in the historical and cultural center "Sovyne Hnizdo"


Within the Prykhystok (Shelter) program framework, 3,600 Zakarpattia residents who sheltered IDPs in their private homes received compensation to pay for utility bills. 


36-year-old Frenchman Remy Perez, who is the sports ambassador of the Échanges Lorraine Ukraine (ELU) - SolidarCatt 'Ukraine, covered 1,700 km from the French city of Katten to the city of Khust in Zakarpattia Oblast by bicycle in almost 8 days to support Ukraine.

An internally displaced woman from Kharkiv created a patriotic sports mural on the wall of the Academy of Sports Education in Uzhhorod. Athletes, a boxer and a gymnast with a blue and yellow flag on the background depicted on the wall not only raise the fighting spirit of Ukrainians but also promote a healthy lifestyle.


The AUI "Active Community" coordinators wove nets for the military and took part in press conferences.
